Nem todas as fraturas vertebrais em pessoas mais velhas se devem à osteoporose. Portanto, a osteoporose tem de ser comprovada antes do início do tratamento.
O historial de fraturas na coluna, no pulso ou na anca deverá indicar suspeita de osteoporose. O exame mais fiável para detetar a osteoporose é a DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry ou Osteodensitometria bifotónica radiológica). Através deste exame, não só é possível confirmar a osteoporose, mas também determinar o grau de osteoporose.
