Escoliosis - Introducción

Existen diferentes tipos y causas de escoliosis: congénita, asociada a otros síndromes, neuromuscular, degenerativa e idiopática. La escoliosis idiopática puede aparecer en una edad temprana, a los seis años o antes, o bien tener una aparición más tardía, después de los seis años.

Escoliosis idiopática del adolescente

La columna vertebral tiene una forma tridimensional. Desde delante se ve recta, desde el lateral se observan las curvas normales.

La escoliosis es una curvatura y una torsión anómalas de la columna.

¿Quién puede padecerla y cuándo?, ¿cuáles son sus causas?

La escoliosis idiopática del adolescente puede presentarse en los jóvenes. Es más frecuente en las mujeres que en los hombres. Suele percibirse durante el crecimiento rápido que se produce durante la pubertad. Si se desconoce el origen de la escoliosis se denomina “escoliosis idiopática”. Actualmente algunas pruebas indican que existe un componente genético y que en algunos casos hay antecedentes familiares. Los gemelos monocigóticos suelen presentar la misma curvatura.
