What is Chiropractic?

The word chiropractic comes from ancient Greek and means “done by hand.” Manipulation of the joints of the body has been used in the healing arts for many centuries and is at the heart of modern chiropractic care.

Chiropractic is a primary health care profession founded in 1895 in the United States and now practiced and recognized in over 100 countries around the world. It is a hands-on health care discipline that focuses on the musculoskeletal system with an emphasis on manual treatments, including spinal manipulation.

Chiropractic is a non-invasive, safe and effective form of treatment for back and neck pain. Chiropractors are trained to assess disorders related to the spine nervous system, and joints of the extremities and provide a diagnosis and treatment of these disorders.

What is a manipulation?

The primary goal of chiropractic manipulation, also referred to as adjustment, is to reduce pain, increase movement into the affected joints and facilitate return to activities. A manipulation is a highly controlled procedure, which rarely causes discomfort. A chiropractor adapts the procedure to meet the specific needs of each patient.

Chiropractic treatment can play an important role in rehabilitation programmes and is commonly used for sports, work and traffic injuries. Chiropractors are trained to prescribe therapeutic exercises and recommend rehabilitation and injury prevention strategies.

People of all ages and from all walks of life can benefit from chiropractic treatment. Chiropractors also provide valuable information about maintaining optimum muskuloskeletal health and provide tips to help the patient reduce the risk of work and sport related injuries.

Conditions commonly treated by Chiropractors:
  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Headache
  • Whiplash
  • Strains and sprains from daily activities
  • Work and sports-related injuries
