Cervical spondylosis and neck pain - Treatment

Based on the clinical and radiological findings, the next step of further treatment is decided. Firstly, pain killers (analgesics) and/or anti-inflammatory and/or muscle relaxant drugs can be discussed with the family doctor. Various forms of physical therapy have the best long-term results for improvement. Around half of the patients usually recover after 7 weeks, and after one year that number increases to around two-thirds. Surgical treatment is indicated if conservative therapy does not help or in particular, if the patient develops further difficulties. Surgical treatment of cervical spondylosis can be performed by an anterior or posterior approach (front or back) to the cervical spine. During the surgical treatment of the cervical spine with the posterior approach, a series of procedures can be performed that include laminectomy, laminoplasty, foraminotomy, or posterior cervical fixation. Anterior cervical discectomy with fusion (ACDF) relies on removal of the slipped disc etc. from the front of the neck with insertion of a fusion device. Newer methods of treatment include insertion of an artificial cervical disc, but this is reserved for selected cases only.
