- Il colpo di frusta può essere diagnosticato in base ai sintomi.
- Il medico può prescrivere farmaci per il dolore e rimanere attivi favorisce il recupero.
- Una RM (imaging in risonanza magnetica) non è generalmente utile e di solito non mostra alcun danno. Può tuttavia mostrare alterazioni senili del collo.
- A volte i sintomi si manifestano immediatamente e a volte la comparsa della rigidità e del dolore può richiedere fino a 48 ore. La maggior parte delle persone affette dal colpo di frusta si riprende entro 1 mese, mentre i più giovani si riprendono più rapidamente.
- Se si subisce un colpo di frusta e servono rassicurazioni, rivolgersi al medico di famiglia o andare in ospedale.

I sintomi comuni includono:
- dolore e rigidità del collo, dolore muovendo la testa
- movimento ridotto della testa e del collo
- dolore, sensazioni di formicolio che scendono nel braccio o nella mano.
